Is Board and Train Worth It? An Honest Jacksonville Guide

Updated October 2026 · Off Leash K9 Training, Jacksonville, FL · (904) 580-6559

Quick answer

Board and train is worth it when you need a well-mannered dog quickly and you will keep practicing at home afterward. At Off Leash K9 Training, Jacksonville, FL your dog lives and trains with a trainer for 1 week ($1,700) or 2 weeks ($2,900), then you get a hands-on handoff session so the training carries over to you.

It is not the best fit if you want to learn every step side by side with your dog, if your dog is a young puppy, or if your budget points to private lessons, which start at $650.

What you actually get

Both programs use the same method. The difference is how far the training goes and how long your handoff session lasts.

When board and train is worth it

  • Your schedule is full. A trainer does the daily repetitions while your dog stays with them, and you learn the handling in one focused session at the end.
  • Everyday habits are wearing you out. Leash pulling, jumping on guests and bolting out the door are exactly what the foundation commands and the door, greeting and meal manners target.
  • You want off-leash reliability. Off-leash heeling and a full off-leash recall are part of the 2-week program, not the 1-week one.
  • You will practice afterward. Training holds when the whole family uses the same commands the trainer used. The handoff session is where you learn them.

When it is not the right choice (yet)

  • Your dog is a young puppy. For puppies from 8 weeks to 5 months there is a separate 1-week Puppy Board & Train ($850) focused on potty training, bite inhibition and socialization, or a single puppy consultation ($100).
  • Your dog has bitten someone or shows human aggression. Those cases go to the Aggression / Anxiety Board & Train, a 2-week program that requires an evaluation first. No trainer can promise a complete fix for major aggression; the realistic goal is control and better management.
  • You want to learn alongside your dog from day one. Private lessons or in-home training keep you involved in every session.
  • Nobody will keep up the practice. Without follow-through at home, any program fades over time.

Questions to ask any board and train program

Whoever you choose, these answers tell you a lot before you hand over your dog:

  1. Who will train my dog day to day, and where does my dog sleep?
  2. Exactly which commands will my dog know at pickup, and how are they tested?
  3. How long is the handoff session, and will every family member be shown the commands?
  4. Which training tools do you use, and will you teach me to use them correctly?
  5. What happens if my dog slips back a few weeks later?
  6. Which behaviors will you not take on in this program?

Frequently asked questions

How long does board and train take?

One or two weeks. The 1-week program builds foundation obedience and manners; the 2-week program adds distance commands, off-leash heeling and a full off-leash recall.

Is the 2-week program better than the 1-week?

It depends on your goal. Families who mainly want reliable basics often start with one week, while dogs that need off-leash reliability or have more challenging behaviors are better served by two.

Can an aggressive dog do board and train?

Not in the standard programs. Human-aggression and bite cases go through the separate Aggression / Anxiety Board & Train after an evaluation, and the goal there is control and management rather than a promised cure.

What happens when I pick my dog up?

You get a hands-on session with the trainer: 90 minutes after the 1-week program and 2 hours one-on-one after the 2-week program. You practice every command yourself before you go home.

Do I get help after the program ends?

Yes. Lifetime phone support and refreshers come with our programs, subject to the guarantee terms of each program. Call (904) 580-6559 if your dog slips back.
